HHBS in the news...

On 28th November, an article appeared in the Sheffield Star about the HHBS Blue Plaque commemorating Joseph Thornton. Mary Hughes, who has lived in the house on Fitzwalter Road for 36 years, recalls the day when Tony Goff, chair of HHBS, knocked on her door to tell her about the history of her home. "Home to the rich and famous".

Portland Works Open Day, 30th October 2011

Portland Works is opening up from 11 until 3.30 on Sunday 30 October. There'll be guided tours round several workshops starting every twenty minutes or so.  If you've never been to a Portland Works open day, this is a great opportunity as they don't happen very often.  Please also bring any friends who might be interested in the community purchase project.

There's only room for 100 altogether on the day, and booking is essential.  The tour takes about an hour, then you'll be free to see the displays in the grinding shop, have cup of tea and talk to the group.

Please send an email to openday@portlandworks.co.uk stating preferrred arrival time - 11, 12, 1 or 2 - and size of your group, and you will be allocated to a tour.

Please note, we regret no under 16's at this open day due to insurance issues.

Lord Mayor unveils HHBS Blue Plaque at Fitzwalter Road

Lord Mayor, Councillor Dr Sylvia Dunkley and Peter Thornton were special guests of HHBS at the unveiling of a Blue Plaque at 64, Fitzwalter Road, Sheffield 2. The plaque commemorates the location of the family home of Joseph William Thornton, founder of the Thorntons confectionary shops. The family were living in this house in 1911 when the first shop was opened at 159 Norfolk Street.
Sadly, it looks as though our first Blue Plaque will also be our last as the Rotary Club have complained that they are the "official" plaque-awarders for Sheffield! Anybody seen one of theirs?

HHBS welcomes a new president

Hallamshire Historic Buildings Society is delighted to announce that Lord Allan of Hallam has agreed to be our new President

Richard Allan has long been connected to the Hallamshire Historic Buildings Society, firstly through his father John, who was Honorary Secretary for many years, then his mother Elizabeth, who is still an active committee member. During Richard's time as a Member of Parliament he became a committee member and a caseworker for the HHBS and many of you will remember the talk he gave on the buildings of Bath. Qualified as an archaeologist, he has always been very interested in the preservation of our architectural heritage. He currently holds the position of Director of Policy for Facebook.

On behalf of the members of HHBS congratulations on your appointment to the House of Lords and welcome to the Hallamshire Historic Buildings Society.

Tony Goff, chairman

Act now to get recognition for historic Sheffield buildings - deadline 12th Feb 2011

Do you know a building or monument that isn't listed but is important to Sheffield in terms of history or architecture? It must be one of Sheffield's best-kept secrets but Sheffield Council is inviting nominations for important local buildings to create a "Local List" (part of the Historic Environment Records - see English Heritage for more details). Local listing won't give any more legal protection however it should ensure that the special character is considered as part of any planning application.

To nominate a building, go to the Sheffield Council website, Planning & Development section, Conservation and the Environment (phew!) and see the Local Listing link on the left-hand side You can nominate online or download & print a form and send it to the address shown on the form (Howden House) . You can also download it here. (You will need Adobe Reader to open it)
