7th November 2011 GREEN MEN & GARGOYLES, Pat McLaughlin When you visit churches, ancient and not-so-ancient, the chances are you will see wonderful carved heads looking down on you, from both the outside and inside walls. Some of these are images of leading citizens of the day kings, queens, bishops, lords and ladies. But many are much more sinister & frightening, green men, gargoyles & other grotesques! Why was so much time and effort put into these “horrible heads”? How far back in time do they go? What do they mean? This talk illustrates and interprets the variety of faces that are to be found in many of our faith sites. It will inspire you to visit them and find out more! DOUGLAS - THE MAN WHO HELPED HOUDINI, Ann Beedham The story of Greenhill born Randolph Douglas Houdini’s close friend and advisor. ‘Randini’, as he was known, gave Houdini his most iconic escape. Local author Ann Beedham will show us old photographs and tell us about his connections with Houdini, Greenhill and the Empire Theatre. The cost is £9.50 per person, to cover the buffet lunch. Hear about the history of Hallamshire and its present incarnation as the city and region in which we live and work. 5th March 2012 PORTLAND WORKS, THE STORY SO FAR Following the HHBS’s donation in 2011 to help save the Portland Works cutlery factory, where stainless steel cutlery was first made, from inappropriate development into flats; one of the campaigners will tell us how the project is progressing and how realistic the ultimate aim of restoring these architecturally significant buildings is. Can they raise enough money to enable the Works to continue to offer low-cost accommodation to craftspeople and the creative industries?
